Registered Nurse - Gastroenterology Lab

The incumbent will be responsible for the direct care of the patient, to include the administration and monitoring of patients receiving moderate sedation. Primary responsibilities will include the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of both direct and indirect nursing care, and identification of outcomes for patients in the gastroenterology setting. She/he must be proficient with and possess the ability to locate the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for all RME in the clinical area. In addition, she/he will be responsible for carrying out proper procedures for patient care in isolation environments by following proper infection control procedures as well as additional duties as assigned. The selected incumbent will have a minimum of one (1) year of Gastroenterology/Endoscopy experience or a minimum one (1) year of recent Acute Care, ICU or procedural experience and at least three (3) years of experience as a Registered Nurse. The incumbent's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Coordinating patient care delivery to ensure the highest quality of care is achieved according to established standards of care/practice, policy, and procedure. The specific patient population to whom direct care is provided will include adults with gastrointestinal disorders/diseases and/or adults needing further evaluation in the Endoscopy Lab. Utilizing the nursing process, skills, technology, research and all available resources to maximize the delivery of safe, efficient, high quality care to a variety of critical care, and Stepdown unit patients. Functioning as a primary nurse accountable for the planning and coordination of the delivery of care, functioning as Charge Nurse based on experience and grade level, and serving in collegial role with other health professionals. Demonstrating excellent verbal and written communication skills. Recognizing and responding promptly and appropriately to emergency situations. Practicing within the guidelines of policies, procedures, standards of care, and scope of practice competencies relating to critical care nursing. Participating in unit-based teaching, conferences, and research/quality improvement projects. Assuming responsibility for maintaining own level of knowledge and clinical competence in nursing through hospital-based in-services, independent study, mandatory reviews and continuing education programs. Performing and documenting (and/or reviewing) required nursing assessment of each patient prior to procedures to determine patient's baseline level of health and any special consideration specific to patients undergoing minimally invasive procedures and/or moderate sedation or anesthesia. Assisting in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures; performing and documenting continuous patient assessment during and after procedures, universal protocol, patient's tolerance of the procedure, course of recovery and status at time of discharge. Maintaining patient safety and comfort by keeping Physician in charge informed of patient's status and performing standard nursing interventions. Providing technical assistance as assigned by Physicians and within nursing scope of practice in both endoscopic and non-endoscopic procedures. Setting up appropriate equipment properly and testing prior to the procedure; maintaining responsibility for the storage, proper cleaning techniques, and use of reusable medical equipment (RME); maintaining proper functioning of all endoscopic equipment through accurate care, cleaning and disinfection/sterilization per Medical Center policy. Performing designated non-endoscopic diagnostic procedures with minimal or no supervision to include but not limited to breath test, pH monitoring/mobility and capsule endoscopy. Processing diagnostic specimens obtained during endoscopic and non-endoscopic procedures, accurately completing or verifying necessary documentation and forms, and assuring delivery to appropriate testing area per Medical Center policy. Assuring adequate preparation, maintenance, and inventory control of both internal and external supplies for daily clinical use. Evaluating and documenting effectiveness of patient care in all phases of the perioperative endoscopy experience. Rotating through performing educational pre-procedure phone instructions and coordination of patient accommodations as necessary. This is a Bargaining Unit position. Work Schedule:

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred
Experience:
BSN degree; Moderate Sedation experience; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
