Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)

Duties include, but are not limited to:
Responsible for decontamination, preparation, equipment storage, and issue of instrument trays, equipment and supplies used by all service lines within the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Disassembles, separates and inspects all instrument and equipment for damage. He/she removes all contaminants (i.e. blood, tissue, tape, fluids, etc.) by soaking, rinsing, wiping, scrubbing and flushing manually or by the use of a variety of decontamination equipment (i.e. ultrasonic washer, washer/decontaminator and cart washer). Inspects and assembles surgical and specialty treatment trays along with sets used on the Med-Surg units, GU Clinic, ICU units, ENT Clinic, Podiatry, X-Ray, Dental, etc. Arranges the instruments in the trays to protect the delicate and sharp tips, assures that the instruments are unclamped and places instruments in the tray according to likeness as noted on reference cards and count sheets. Expected to help train other Medical Supply Technicians in all facets of processing instruments and supplies. Make daily trips to the Operating Room suite and must be knowledgeable of dress codes, traffic control, and aseptic techniques performed in this restricted area. Facilitate the daily progress of the Operating Room schedule by delivering hands-on service to a specific Operating Room if needed and directed by the Operating Room personnel. Clean, examine, select and otherwise prepare and sterilize Operating Room and specialty clinic supplies along with instrumentation. This includes, but is not limited to, total joint instrumentation, micro-surgical trays, cataract sets, robotics, laparoscopic, transplant and dental trays. This expertise covers all necessary equipment and instrumentation to service twelve surgical specialties and the additional department needs at VAPHS. Work Schedule:

United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience and/or Education:
(1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or (2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position. (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part. Grade Determinations:
in addition to the Basic Requirements above, candidates must demonstrate one year of equivalent experience at the next lower grade level:
GS-05 (Developmental Level) (a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level; or (b) Education. Four academic years above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree with at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation or a Bachelor's degree. (c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience or education above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Basic knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings. 2. Basic knowledge of event-related packaging in regards to sterility. 3. Knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment. In addition to meeting the one year of equivalent experience at the next lower grade the applicant must also demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities at the GS-6 level:
GS-06 (Full Performance Level) (a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings. 2. Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination. 3. Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures. 4. Knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation. 5. Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures. Preferred

The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing for prolonged periods of time, carrying medical supply items weighing up to 50 pounds, frequently bending and stretching/reaching, and pushing fully-loaded medical supply carts weighing as much as 500 pounds which must be negotiated up inclines and over rises, or positioning them on sterilizer track rails. The work requires dexterity in such tasks as inserting small rods into needle openings or precisely aligning component parts while reassembling medical equipment. Tension and stress are induced by the critical nature of producing work results critical to patient care on pre-established time frames and in emergent situations. Workdays can be lengthened without notice by emergency surgery instrumentation needs. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. NOTE:
Selectees will be required to pass VA Level 1 certification under the VA SPS Certification Program, within 45 days of employment. Selectee will be required to pass and maintain VA Level 2 Certification.
